Getting started as a social media manager: 3 things to know

Many of us spend more time on social media than we’d like to admit, but that doesn’t instantly mean that we can produce quality content while running a social media account for a business.

I’m going to break down the 3 things that can help you get a good start as a social media manager.

Understand your brand

Over the past few years I have managed 5 different social media accounts for businesses. These ranged from mental health to housing on a variety of social platforms. By understanding the goals of each business and their brand identity, I was better prepared to know what kind of content to post.

Look through the current social platforms and identify which posts performed the best. Right now, video content is being pushed pretty much everywhere and social media is constantly changing. Stay up to date with trends, but don’t be afraid to try new types of posts that you think could perform well.

Understand your audience

Do a deep dive into your company’s mission to break down exactly who their target audience is. Get to know their age, gender, location, and interests. After you know who they are, find out where they are.

You can diversify your content to reach your audience through multiple channels. If you have the freedom, create new accounts on the platforms your business isn’t currently using. It never hurts to try and creating an account is free, so you might as well!

Are you currently reaching your audience? Look into your insights in the settings of the social platforms to find who you are reaching and how you can target your specific audience better.

Understand your competitor

Although it’s not ethical to copy any posts from your competitors, getting to know who they are will help you better create your own original posts.

If your competitor has the same target audience and they are reaching them better than you are, figure out what they are doing. It won’t take long for you to find something you can implement: like a better call to action on posts, more video content, or simply posting in stories more frequently.

Once you have done a deep dive and can understand these 3 things, you will be on your way to creating content that will convert!
